Learning Areas

Islamic studies

Children are taught basic Islamic Principles & are taught the Arabic Alphabet, as well as short surahs& the kalimahs.

Practical life

In the Practical Life area, children carry out familiar home activities such as sweeping, dusting, pouring, etc. These activities are designed to help the child achieve independence and confidence through meaningful activities with real life objects. These activities help develop co-ordination, independence, hand dexterity, patience, grace & courtesy, care of the person & care of the environment. Practical Life is therefore the backbone of the Montessori classroom as it allows the child to familiarise himself with the classroom & how it works.

Sensorial

The sensorial section is the heart of the Montessori classroom. It deals with developing and refining the senses. Dimensions, forms, colours, weight, shape, size, texture, smell, sound, taste etc. are all worked with in this section.

Language

Indirect preparation is continuously given in order for the child to properly complete activities. The child learns to control wrist movements and perfect the pincer grip necessary for writing. The child is introduced to the phonetic alphabet & then gradually begins to build words. The child then spontaneously starts to recognise that words are made up of certain letters put together and then at his own pace begin to read words, phrases, sentences and then books.

Maths

The child is introduced to maths from simple to complex (as all other aspects in the classroom). They are first taught the quantities, then symbols and the two aspects are later merged. Depending on where the child’s strengths lie, the child will be able to do addition, multiplication, subtraction and division; first simple operations and then later on the expanded notation.

Cultural

The cultural section is divided into Geography, History, Science, Art, Music, Religion, Botany and Zoology. The child is exposed to the various subjects to feed their imaginations and understanding of the world around them. The cultural activities also help the child to understand his role in the world and that he is, in fact, a very important part of the whole system.
